Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was a Dutch painter and one of the pioneers of abstract art. A leading figure of the De Stijl movement, he is best known for his iconic compositions of black lines and primary colours, which sought to express universal harmony and balance. Through a radical process of abstraction, Mondrian reduced form and colour to their essential elements, profoundly influencing modern art, architecture, and design. His work remains a cornerstone of 20th-century abstraction.
