Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831–1915) was a Dutch painter and one of the leading figures of the Hague School. Best known for his atmospheric seascapes and panoramic views of the North Sea, he developed a distinctive style characterised by naturalistic detail, subtle tonal variations, and a remarkable sensitivity to light and weather. His powerful depictions of the sea and coastal life established him as one of the most celebrated maritime painters of the 19th century.
